SUMMARY:TALK: Medieval Standing Crosses in Lincolnshire
DESCRIPTION:Most\, if not all\, English medieval churchyards once contained one or more standing crosses of stone or timber to mark the sacred ground containing the mortal remains of its parishioners. Standing crosses were also built on marketplaces and village greens. They were a familiar feature of the medieval landscape\, but most were systematically demolished between 1547 and 1643.\n\nThe remains of about 200 later medieval standing stone crosses still survive in Lincolnshire. In this lecture Dave will talk about what these crosses represented\, how they were used and what remains of them today. \nDave Start is an archaeologist who came to Lincolnshire in 1988 to set up and run the Heritage Trust of Lincolnshire. He was CEO there until he retired in 2013. Dave continues to dabble in Lincolnshire archaeology and is the editor of the SLHA journal\, Lincolnshire History and Archaeology. \n\nHe has a website about the subject at www.lincscrosses.org.uk\nAdmission charge £2 members\, £5 non members \nImage: The churchyard cross at Tetford (Richard Croft)
