SUMMARY:Ran-tanning and Riding the Stang
DESCRIPTION:Public disapproval used to take a very visible and audible form: “ran – tanning” or “riding the stang” consisted of a crowd gathering outside someone’s house\, banging pots and pans and making as much noise as they could.  The custom has now largely died out\, at least in physical form.  Historian Andrew Walker describes what this noisy penalty used to involve. \nPresented by Dr Andrew Walker. \nEntrance fee £2 for members\, £5 for non members

He later succeeded to the title of Viscount Torrington. \nPresented by Brian Davey. \nAdmission charge £2 members\, £5 non members

SUMMARY:TALK: Williasm Marwood: Cobbler\, Preacher\, Hangman
DESCRIPTION:From cobbler to state executioner: hear the extraordinary story of how a local man offered his services to the national justice system in Victorian Britain and Ireland.  Convinced that his “long drop” system of execution offered a far more humane method of executing prisoners convicted of capital offences\, William Marwood became famous across the country.  This account includes some background history about the development and eventual abolition of capital punishment. \nThis talk will link in to our William Marwood exhibition at the Sir Joseph Banks Centre\, which starts on June 25. \nPlease note that due to the subject matter\, the talk may not be suitable for all. \nPresented by Adam Cartwright. \nAdmission charge: members £2\, non members £5

SUMMARY:William Marwood: Cobbler\, Preacher\, Hangman - Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Running from 25th June to 30th September\,William Marwood: Cobbler\, Preacher\, Hangman tells the story of the man who rose from humble beginnings in the Lincolnshire Wolds to become the most well-known executioner of the Victorian age\, and pioneer of the “long drop” method of hanging\, which he developed here in Lincolnshire. \nThe exhibition explores Marwood’s complex character and the truth behind his reputation. Visitors can also discover more about crime and punishment in Victorian Britain\, and Marwood’s role in some of the most notorious criminal cases that shocked 19th century society. \nDrawing on original research by Society members and material from their Town Archive\, the exhibition places Marwood within the community where he lived. It reveals the roots of a figure who became a household name in Victorian England\, and whose waxwork once graced the Chamber of Horrors at Madame Tussaud’s. \nThe exhibition is open Thursday to Saturday\, 10am–4pm\, from 25 June to 30 September at the Joseph Banks Centre in Horncastle. It is free to visit\, but all donations towards the upkeep of the Society’s Town Archive are warmly received.
