William Marwood was a cobbler who spent most of his life in Horncastle … but he was better known nationally as Marwood the hangman.  He executed over 170 criminals who had been convicted of capital offences between 1872 and his death in 1883.

This 24 page booklet is based on our 2026 exhibition about Marwood and is essential reading for anyone who wants to know more about this remarkable man.
